James is a Senior Consultant based in our Guangzhou office advising on brand, digital content protection and enforcement programmes.
Since James moved to China in 2015, his focus has been on protecting IP rights on both the Internet and in the brick and mortar world. He led the Online Team from September 2016 until June 2018 and is now co-head of the China Enforcement Group.
He has worked closely with a range of businesses, from start-ups to multinationals, in industries ranging from luxury goods, apparel, FMCGs, pharmaceuticals, electronics and software.
James’ practice areas are online/offline enforcement programmes, anti-counterfeiting, intelligence and evidence gathering, dispute resolution, litigation management, online monitoring and takedown, domain name recovery, trade fair enforcement and customs protection measures.
He has represented clients in mediations before the Chinese authorities and engaged in lobbying activities in support of foreign rightsholders in China.
James also advises clients on their China market entry strategy and the use of blockchain technology to secure evidence for IP disputes.
James joined Rouse in 2013 from his earlier role at a computer games company, where he was responsible for licensing IP assets to use in console games.
In addition to his extensive work with brand and digital content owners, James is also experienced in protecting and leveraging patents, designs and utility models.
