Biography
James is a Principal and the Deputy Global Enforcement Head based in our Guangzhou office. He advises leading multinationals and fast-growth companies on protecting, enforcing, and leveraging their intellectual assets.
He works closely with brand, digital content, and technology owners across the electronics, luxury goods, apparel, FMCGs, industrial and software industries.
Since James moved to China in 2015, his focus has been on protecting IP rights on both the online and brick and mortar world. He led the Online Team from September 2016 until June 2018 and was co-head of the China Enforcement Group from February 2021 – June 2022.
James’ practice areas are intelligence-led online/offline enforcement programmes, anti-counterfeiting, evidence gathering, dispute resolution, litigation management, online monitoring and takedown, domain name recovery, trade fair enforcement and customs protection measures.
He has represented clients in mediations before the Chinese authorities and engaged in lobbying activities in support of foreign rightsholders in China.
James also advises clients on their China market entry strategy and the use of blockchain technology to secure evidence for IP disputes.
James joined the Rouse office London in 2013 from his earlier role at a computer games company, where he was responsible for licensing IP assets to use in console games.
