Rouse has a position available for a dynamic South African qualified trade mark associate in its office in Cape Town, South Africa. The successful candidate will work on a wide range of trademark matters in South Africa, working through Rouse’s newly established network law firm, and in Sub-Sahara Africa. The position offers the opportunity to be part of one of the leading IP services groups in the world, with more than 800 people working out of 23 offices in 15 jurisdictions; and to grow as a trade mark specialist across all aspects of the lifecycle of trademarks.
Outline of Responsibilities
The qualified candidate will closely work with the existing team to resolve a variety of IP matters effectively and efficiently, including but not limited to the following:
- Conduct trademark clearance searches and advise on the availability and registrability of trademarks.
- Handle all aspects of trademark prosecution matters, including all types of applications.
- Provide practical and technically sound advice on trademark prosecution matters, including dealing with Office Actions and preparing submissions to trademark registries.
- Handle all manner of recordal matters, including assignments and registered users.
- Manage trademark maintenance requirements, including various changes and renewals.
- Assess, advise on, and deal with trade mark opposition and cancellation matters.
- Provide trademark portfolio management services to clients, including conducting gap analysis projects and preparing recommendations with a view to creating value for clients.
- Oversee record management in the trademark management system used by Rouse.
- Manage and consistently meet statutory and client deadlines.
- Meet and exceed client needs and expectations.

- Continuously focus on the improvement of the efficiency of internal processes.
- Run multiple case files in an organised and proactive manner.
- Mentor paralegals and trainees.

Technical Skills
- Qualified South African attorney with at least three years’ experience in trademark related matters with a focus on prosecution. Completion of the SAIIPL exams would be advantageous.
- Fluent in English, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Strong organizational and project management skills.
- Detail-oriented, proactive & diligent.
- Must be able to work under pressure.
- A strong team player.
- Excellent computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.)
