The rise of AI has transformed numerous industries, and intellectual property is no exception. In recent years, IP offices across Asia have increasingly embraced AI technologies to streamline operations, enhance efficiencies and provide better services to trademark applicants and owners.
This article provides a snapshot of the current AI integration and AI initiatives undertaken by IP offices in ASEAN and Hong Kong.
Cambodia
The Department of Intellectual Property Rights in Cambodia has not specifically mentioned the use of AI in its trademark registration or search processes. However, the Ministry of Industry, Science, Technology and Innovation in Cambodia has released a report titled “Artificial intelligence landscape in Cambodia: current status and future trends”, which discusses the state of AI in Cambodia and offers insights and recommendations for its development across various sectors. This indicates a growing interest and potential integration of AI technologies in different domains within the country, including possibly in IP management.
Hong Kong
The Hong Kong Intellectual Property Department is looking at using AI technology to reinvent operations, such as implementing AI image comparison technology to quickly identify similar trademarks between images uploaded to its website and trademarks in its database.
Indonesia
The Directorate General of Intellectual Property of Indonesia and the Trademark Office (TMO) have been actively exploring the use of AI and its applications for trademark filings, reflecting the country's commitment to modernise its IP management systems and provide more efficient services to applicants.
